Identidade

A é idêntico a A.

minha escrita interior?

Interrogo signos dúbios

e suas variações calidoscópicas

a cada segundo de observação.

A verdade essencial

é o desconhecido que me habita

Felizmente, eu penso, nenhuma resposta esgota a imensa questão.

Identity

It is amazing how we use words and concepts on a daily basis without actually thinking about their meaning or sense. If we look the word up in the Webster Dictionary we will find:

Full Definition of IDENTITY

1a :  sameness of essential or generic character in different instances ; 1b:  sameness in all that constitutes the objective reality of a thing :  oneness; 2a:  the distinguishing character or personality of an individual :  individuality; 2b:  the relation established by psychological identification; 3:  the condition of being the same with something described or asserted identity of stolen goods; 4:  an equation that is satisfied for all values of the symbols

We notice the term has different meanings, depending on the context it is being used.

The word identity has a place in Mathematics, Physics, Natural Science and has a fundamental meaning in the Human Sciences. It is an ontological principle in Philosophy: everything that is, is. Identity, as a principle, speaks of the equal: A=A. A is identical to A.

A is always the same, within itself. And what does that mean to us?

When we think about it, we realize that what concerns us is the question of identity.

Let’s try to about approach that question based on Martin Heidegger’s thought. The philosopher thinks the question of being, a question forgotten in Philosophy. Heidegger does not understand man as a rational animal or a psyche or as consciousness, I, subject and so on. Heidegger understands man as being-in-the-world (Dasein). This is not just another expression among others to portray the human being. Therefore, Heidegger questions the whole History of western thought, since the origins of Greek Philosophy until nowadays thoughts, in the technological era.

The question of identity, according to Daseinsanalyse, different from other psychological approaches (Daseinsanalyse is not a psychological approach), can only be approached assuming the understanding of man as Dasein, being-in-the-world, being-there. Dasein is the entity to which it’s being is a question. Dasein’s own being is its question.  “Who am I”, “What do I do”, “What do I want” as questions can only be asked by the entity that carries its own being. The being-there, the Dasein, is in fact that entity characterized by the non-being, in other words, I am a thrown project, a future, a wannabe, a not-yet. Curiously, we are our own project, that that we dream of. We are nothingness, something that hasn’t happened yet, something to be done. Heidegger tells us the being-there is thrown in the task of being. We must be, we must be what is given to us to be. Interestingly, we have the impression of being the same, although our body changes, our looks change, our knowledge, our opinions change, we feel the same, although not identical. The establishment of that moment, of the acknowledgement of the one’s self, is given because we are essentially historical, in the sense of linking in a co-originally way the past, the present and the future. It is not about a mental activity in which we think about the past and the future, but instead we are determined by the events, by the experiences, by the facts, by the interpretation of the facts of ours lives, in the way we feel and understand ourselves.

We understand our being as that history thrown to the openness of the future. Without this “no”, without that lack, there wouldn’t be our movement towards accomplishments. Those accomplishments, in turn, show us who we are, our identity.

Therefore we can say that identity is linked to dreams, projects, future, “not yet”. However, we also are the legacy of our past. We are made of, lead by and oriented by our experiences lived, weather they are clear or not. The correlation between past and future in a given present is the essence of man and in a certain way constitutes the identity. Identity may be thought as “each one to oneself, being the same”. Identity as a unit, not as a monotonous uniformity but in the build up of a unique developed history, unfolds in time and space that is one’s own. Therefore the reason of the idea of singularity, the idea of building up an understanding of the one’s self as a task to each one of us. In every phase of our lives, since very early age, we recognize our own features that we transmit to others without always even realizing it. The question “who am I?” reveals itself many times as being anguishing as we don’t have an answer or a finished and final definition, as if we were objects. The continuous search for an answer to that question is connected to what was above mentioned: we are the “not yet” accomplished as much as who we were and what we did. Fortunately, I’d say, the past does not define us and finishes as if in a system of cause and effect. If I suffered a trauma in my childhood, if I didn’t get some opportunities in life, if I were born in a country at war, etc., are important facts, no doubt, but although they compose my history they do not determine its end…

That is why we are always unique, singular and responsible for our existence. In that aspect, we may also say we are free, in a very important sense. We are not free of circumstances, we are not free of eventualities, of troubles, but we are free to take responsibility of our existence. That is probably the human being’s greatest dignity: the possibility to freely choose to be whoever one has to be.

Philosopher Hannah Arendt, when thinking about the human condition points out something fundamental that characterizes us as free beings and says:

“Left to themselves, the human businesses may only follow the law of mortality, which is the only law certain that life is limited between birth and death. The power of taking action interferes with that law because it disrupts the relentless and automatic course of daily life, which, in turn, as we have seen, disrupts and interferes with biological life’s process cycle. Flowing towards death, man’s life would inevitably drag with it all human things into doom and destruction, if it weren’t for human’s power of interrupting and starting something new, power inherent to action as perennial warning that men, although must die, they are not born to die, but to start.”

That daily start or re-start, that action driven by the calling of a dream, of a project to be accomplished indicates who we are, who we are not yet and points towards a destiny, a finish line, our invisible cities. The poets know that and speak about that historicity in many ways.

Ítalo Calvino describes, in the Invisible Cities, Zaira: “a description of Zaira as it is today should contain all Zaira’s past. The city, however, does not tell its past, but contains it like the lines of a hand, written in the corners of the streets, the bars of the windows, the banisters of the steps, the antennae of the lightning rods, the poles of the flags, every segment marked in turn with scratches, indentations, scrolls.”

Carlos Drummond de Andrade also approaches the matter in a poem:

The Other

How to decipher ten thousand year-old pictograms

if I can’t even decipher

my inner writing?

I question Dubious signs

and their kaleidoscopic variations

every second of watching.

The essential truth

is the unknown that inhabits me

and punches me every morning.

I’m also being watched by him

with irony, contempt, incomprehension.

And that’s how we live, if confrontation may be called living,

united, unable to disconnect,

accommodated, hostile,

eaten away by infernal curiosity.

Carlos Drummond de Andrade

There are many ways in which poets, philosophers, men try to express the great challenge the problem of being imposes on us. Fortunately, I believe no given response answers this important question.
