What places know

Children usually play with reality freely. They create new worlds, make friends with inanimate objects and animals. Keep hiding places and believe these places somehow know them and are their biggest accomplices.

One tree hit me like a two-parts divided tale about this boy and secrets places, exploring senses, mysteries and time.

In the first part we meet the memories of this child and his secret spot. It’s like we’re thrown together in a tunnel, travelling to the past when the instincts were in their best shape. Then all the characters and the enchanted wood ‐ where the secrets, mysteries and fantasies were revealed-, are presented. The forever opened eyes of the stuffed cat, the transparent flying bat, blended images, the creepy trees, the shadows on walls, the fragile ice (or glass)… When it happened? Who were there? Anybody else saw what I saw behind the little house in the field?

Then we snap out of this mystic moment and are placed back in the present – the host of this time being a blindfolded horse, as if it is unaware of its power and beauty. And it is like time passed by so quickly and left quite few witness to tell. But the place knows. And the boy grew up but he holds the secrets within his heart. The paths are open for the young ones to walk by. And for those who are patient there will always be a good story to tell, secrets to share, chances to explore senses, mysteries and time.

Flavia, congratualtions with sensibility you told what you feel about this experience with One Tree.

Flavinha, it is interesting to think that the verb “saber” (“to know”, in Portuguese) also means “ter gosto ou sabor de” (“to taste like…”). I found it very beautiful the way you’ve approached to the book. I think it is somehow similar to the way I relate to it. Good text!

Let’s not say it is such eh a profound work, hihi, otherwise I will walk next to my shoes from vanity
Ice, yes it is ice. But since the majority feels it is glass, what can I say? Maybe it turns into glass behind the little house, Flavia! Perhaps you were there first and found out places know something. You think my places testify I never grew up?
I do think this, many times. Only a few times I think it not!
Machiel

I love that it is ice! So impermanent, so intense to the touch of hands… Great! And I’m sure some amazing creature lives in that little house, and it is probably a very good friends of yours, Machiel ;) ! Maybe it is the reason why some part of you is still a child… What a bliss!
